Wednesday Night Not-Iditarod

eleven people, four dogs, three vehicles to get us out of the city, and one 10km out-and-back that turned into a 16km out-and-back which was manageable because we haven't had fresh snow in a while so the trail was fairly clear but the ground frozen rock solid - my ankles took a number of good twists. the sky was clear, which made it cold, but the stars that much more plentiful. beer and chips when i got home. and so to bed...

what exactly is an out-and-back? it sounds like the blackberry bramble-filled alley behind my elementary school classroom, where we congregated at recess to play non-gender-specific house and wait for the blackberries to stop looking so green.

it is both a blackberry bramble-filled alley from your childhood as well as a trail that one will run to a point and then turn back on.

there are basically three options for trails: an out-and-back, which involves repetition, but in the opposite manner; a loop; and a key-swap, which takes some organization - two groups run the trail, each starting at an opposite end. the groups pass each other at some point along the trail and swap keys for vehicles waiting at the opposite ends. we congregate at a pre-determined points and switch vehicles back again.

a fourth option would be to get lost and never return, but in general i try not to make that an option.

can we have a picture of this? do you run with the dogs? what are these "vehicles"?
I feel like such a city mouse - I am going to go for a walk right now.

yes, we run with the dogs. there are no photos from our night trail adventures because we're all wearing headlamps, as it is dark, and photos tend not to do it justice. someone usually has a camera for the daytime runs, so i will get you a shot that has unidentifiable people & dogs in it this weekend.
